Hello New York City
I moved. Eight months ago. It's amazing. And of course, in true Emily fashion, I'm continuing my lifelong study and science of food, fitness, and lifestyle coaching.
It’s been a long time.
I just passed my 8 month anniversary living in NYC. A dream I’ve had since I was about 18. And again at 22. And 26. And definitely 30. So here we are at 34. It was well worth the wait.
10 things I’ve learn living in New York City.
Dogs everywhere. And they’re dressed better than you. Always weather appropriate with the best shoes to keep their paws clean and dry.
There will be very long lines at the grocery store. But don’t let it deter you. They have it down to a science. You will be through in a matter of minutes with how many registers they have and employees helping guide the traffic.
Speaking of traffic, it’s not the cars you need to worry about it’s the damn bikes. Cars will always slow down on yellow and stop on red. No sliding through lights here you will hit someone. But bikes? They’re merciless, and they will hit you.
Cabs > Ubers. It’s giving Carrie Bradshaw and they’re cheaper and faster.
The subway is great. While I do miss driving, I don’t even realize it. You get your routine down quickly. Don’t be scared of the subway.
Don’t make eye contact. With most people. Especially the questionable ones. You know who I mean. Just don’t. I’m used to small smiles and hi’s to everyone I see. Do not do that. I’ve been sung to and yelled out from making unintentional eye contact.
Fitness means something completely different to me here. In fact my lifestyle in general has done a complete 180. For the better, in my opinion. NYC in a strange way has brought more balance. And let’s be real, NYC is a workout in and of itself.
When you leave in the morning, you might not know when you’re coming home. Be prepared. I’ve had days where I have my work bag, a gym bag, and a tote thrown in in case I need to run to the store.
Solo everything is more than acceptable. Solo dinner and drinks? Completely normal. Movie night? Done.
Get out of the city on a regular basis. You won’t know until you KNOW. I hit a point in March where I didn’t know why I was panicked but I was. What did I need? A weekend away. Get out of here once at least every 2 months or so. It will exhaust your nervous system without realizing it.
Bonus #11 NYC makes you want to aim big. It’s intoxicating. Inspiring. Wild. But at the same time grounding in an odd way. In a way that makes you want to keep getting to know yourself and those around you. And remember who you are and what you want in life. And because of this inspiring yet grounded feeling, I have wanted to get back to helping people through lifestyle coaching.
I have gone on a journey with my own health and still am. I’m forever learning and soaking up different ways of training, living, eating and being. It’s my emotional wellbeing that has led to the physical. And the physical that keeps the emotional in check.
That being said, I want to share it again. I’m a coach. Always have been, always will be. And I’m coaching again. From programming to general calorie and meal planning to overall lifestyle habits. I’m here. I never went anywhere.
Most of you on this email list have always known me most as a coach. A bouncy, high energy fitness coach with a love of cooking and meal prepping. What I bring to my coaching is empathy, accountability, and a curation of everything I have learned thus far. There is no magic sauce to your goals. Sometimes you just need a friend. A friend who can show you where to start, hold you accountable, and adjust along the way.
If you’re interested, I’d love to hear from you. I’m an email way. We’ll chat over a casual intro call, discussing about what want to feel and why you’re ready to have someone like me in your corner to give you the roadmap.
Let’s talk.
